Inductive dressed ring traps for ultracold atoms

چکیده
We present two novel dressed inductive ring trap geometries, ideal for atom interferometry or studies of superfluidity and well-suited to utilisation in atom chip architectures. The design permits ring radii currently only accessible via near-diffraction-limited optical traps, whilst retaining the ultra-smooth magnetic potential afforded by inductive traps. One geometry offers simple parallel implementation of multiple rings, whereas the other geometry permits axial beamsplitting of the torus suitable for whole-ring atom interferometry.

Recent developments in trapping and manipulation of atoms with adiabatic potentials
A combination of static and oscillating magnetic fields can be used to ‘dress’ atoms with radiofrequency (RF), or microwave, radiation. The spatial variation of these fields can be used to create an enormous variety of traps for ultra-cold atoms and quantum gases. This article reviews the type and character of these adiabatic traps and the applications which include atom interferometry and the ...

Recent progress in optics, atomic physics and material science has paved the way to study quantum effects in ultracold atomic alkali gases confined to non-trivial geometries. Multiply connected traps for cold atoms can be prepared by combining inhomogeneous distributions of DC and radio-frequency electromagnetic fields with optical fields that require complex systems for frequency control and s...
متن کاملRing trap for ultracold atoms
We propose a toroidal trap designed for ultracold atoms. It relies on a combination of a magnetic trap for rf-dressed atoms, which creates a bubble-like trap, and a standing wave of light. This trap is well-suited for investigating questions of low dimensionality in a ring potential. We study the trap characteristics for a set of experimentally accessible parameters. A loading procedure from a ...
متن کاملDark Optical Lattice of Ring Traps for Cold Atoms
We propose a new geometry of optical lattice for cold atoms, namely a lattice made of a 1D stack of dark ring traps. It is obtained through the interference pattern of a standard Gaussian beam with a counter-propagating hollow beam obtained using a setup with two conical lenses. The traps of the resulting lattice are characterized by a high confinement and a filling rate much larger than unity,...
متن کاملNon-adiabatic losses from radio-frequency dressed cold atom traps: beyond the Landau-Zener model
Non-adiabatic decay rates for a radio-frequency dressed magnetic trap are calculated using Fermi’s Golden Rule: that is, we examine the probability for a single atom to make transitions out of the dressed trap and into a continuum in the adiabatic limit, where perturbation theory can be applied. This approach can be compared to the semi-classical Landau-Zener theory of a resonant dressed atom t...
